Zach Wamp’s Theocracy Hypocrisy: A Worldview in Conflict with a Corporate Donation

Posted on 29 July 2010

On July 4th, Zach Wamp preached at Higher Ground Baptist Curch in Kingsport, Tennessee.

In his ten minute sermon, he displayed his Southern Baptist fundamentalist belief that the Bible is the inerrant, unmistakable word of God.

Wamp said, “When anybody says to you that they want to be in politics or government or elected office….ask ‘em this one first: what is your worldview? And, just wait for an answer. Because if they can’t tell you that my worldview is that God is the center of the universe, not man. He made us to serve Him and to serve each other, that the Bible is inerrant. Every single word of it is true…”

Zach Wamp would make a good preacher in a Southern Baptist Church because Zach Wamp is also in-step with many Southern Baptists in believing that we should live in a theocracy. He says, “And, that every policy should stand on those truths. Praise him! Every policy: your individual policy, your marriage policy, your family policy, your corporate policy, your community policy, your local government policy, your state government policy, your federal govenrment policy. Every policy should stand on those [Biblical] truths.”

There is an inconsistency in Zach Wamp’s personal policy. According to his Savior, Jesus, the man whom he wants to live with forever, money lenders should be driven from the church, especially those who are usurers like those who charge insane fees and interest rates for payday or title loans. Additionally, Exodus, Leviticus, Deuteronomy, Nehemiah, Psalm, Proverbs, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Matthew, and Luke are all books of the Bible that include statements against such usury.

Is there a corporate donation that conflicts with Zach Wamp’s theocratic worldview? Yes. Check into Cash, which actually has a payday loan option that charges more than 1,000% APR, conflicts with Zach Wamp’s theocratic worldview. According to Check into Cash’s Web site, here are the costs of a payday loan:

$100 payday advance with a $15 fee = 391% APR
$100 credit card balance with a $37 late fee = 965% APR
$100 utility bill with $46 late/reconnect fees = 1,203% ARP
$100 bounced check with $54 NSF/merchant fees = 1,409% APR

According to Americans for Fairness in Lending, high cost payday loans are illegal in 15 states. As of the end of 2008, the following states outlaw these very expensive loans: Arkansas, Connecticut, Georgia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and West Virginia.

Payday loans are also illegal in the District of Columbia, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

Also, in November 2008, voters in Ohio and Arizona soundly defeated payday loan industry ballot initiatives to preserve lenders’ rights to charge 391% APR.

In addition, Congress banned payday lending to service members and their families.
